About The Tutors

Michael Weller

Michael grew up in Winchester. He studied librarianship and realised early on he didn't want to be a librarian. Going to life-drawing classes cheered him up. He became a features subtitler for the deaf and hard-of-hearing, a lucky escape. Later, Michael took a second degree in Fine Art printmaking at London Metropolitan University and achieved a First. Then he attended Lavender Hill Studios – a traditional atelier-style painting school, the first of its kind in the UK. He came back to Winchester and moved to Brassey Road Studio. He was a New English Art Club drawing scholar for 2014. In 2015 Michael won both the Winsor & Newton Award and the Le Clerc Fowle Medal for outstanding group of paintings.
Michael draws and paints in a traditional style, from life. He paints landscapes in oil outside in the open air. His still-life oil paintings are done in daylight in the studio. He usually scrapes off the paint and starts again.

Julia Hawkins

Julia Hawkins is a prize-winning contemporary figurative artist based in Surrey, UK. Her works, highly regarded by colleagues and collectors alike, are frequently exhibited with The Federation of British Artists. Her expressive landscapes and portraits reveal an experienced painter and colourist, who truly captures the essence of her subject.
