Art Courses

  • 10am - 4pm all days | August 4th / 5th / 6th | Oils  Come to paint at this spellbinding location overlooking the sea and the Seven Sisters Cliffs taught by New English Art Club member Daniel Shadbolt. The Coastguard Cottage is your painting haven for the three days, set up your easel on the huge deck with the sea lapping at your toes, or walk a few steps and you are on the beach itself. Daniel will guide you through making well drawing and well thought out seascape and landscape paintings. Being receptive to the environment is a skill in itself that the landscape painter will be encouraged to develop during this course.  This will be paired with personal advice on how to locate a view which is suitable not only to your aesthetic preferences, but also to the painting techniques that you wish to explore. Colour relation and identification will be considered specifically for landscape oil painting.  In order to work with confidence and clarity, these ideas will be initially introduced through making studies to begin with. Focusing on analytical colour and tone, each student will be assisted in developing their individual palette control. Tutorials about 'plein air' painting are tailored to each student's needs and abilities. Drawing alongside the oil painting will enrich the painting process and refresh the eye, enabling you to return to the painting with renewed vigour.  Combining an engaged and fluid handling of oil paint with a thorough and objective looking, can make a landscape both painterly and naturalistic. The course will result in two or more paintings in oils, along with several drawings. Either as a boost of concentrated activity to your studio work, or as a one off investigation into landscape painting, the objective will be to immerse yourself in three day's of landscape painting in a unique setting. We stayed as guests and spent our days exploring the immediate countryside on foot or striking out to various towns, national parks, historical sites and one big day trip to Grenada. We then returned each night to a delicious feast and convival table, and the silence and peace of the valley. It was a wonderful family holiday but also would be a romantic escape for a couple, or a relaxing, thoughtful retreat for a solo traveller. I’ve vowed to return to do a painting or drawing week and was thankful to have discovered a beautiful, very untouristed, part of Spain I might not otherwise have visited.' Day 1 – Arrival on the evening of September 12th Arrive at Los Gázquez. Once you are accommodated and rested your tutor Louise and your host Simon will give you an introductory talk to the week over a glass of cava and some olives. • September 22nd -25th | 4 Days | 10am - 4pm  A wonderful experience with the two day workshop at the New School of Art in London. A warm and sensitive host, the room full of light and atmosphere, and beautiful people. Martin Yeoman was an inspiring instructor and dedicated enough time to each of us individually. It is very easy to get there from the Canning Town station, the lovely way there is a plus. - March 2017 This four day course develops the artist’s ability to represent the figure in pictorial space. Drawings will be made based on observation from life with attention to proportional accuracy, foreshortening and the use of form and cast shadows. An introductory study of the bones and muscles will enhance figurative drawing ability and skills. Students will gain a mastery of realistic painting and develop a classical approach to the figure.  Students will address composition, perspective, focal point and value pattern. Students will then be encouraged, while working from the live model, to draw and paint what they see in terms of what they know. There will be plenty of individual instruction as well as group critiques and lectures. Martin will do numerous demonstrations outlining all stages of the paintings and drawings beginning with placement, anatomical landmarks, shadow shape construction, value relationships, paint quality and warm and cool colour. • The three day life-model figure painting workshop with Roni Taharlev is intended not only to study the basic structural aspects of dealing with the human body, but also to reach a deeper understanding of art on a larger scale. We will discuss painting the nude and the advantages of the human figure as a mean of expression. Participants will learn painting a figure in all its aspects: taking measure, structure, flesh tones, composition, body expression, and gestures. In the process we will deepen our understanding of tonal values (density), temperature, skin tones, and edges in the human figure; and study how to paint with no medium (like oil or turpentine), and how to work with a limited palette of mainly earth colours.

  • This Portrait Painting Masterclass will begin with a brief introduction from Tim Benson about the philosophy behind his style of work as well as the choice of materials he uses. Students will be asked to undertake some small, quick oil sketches. Each sketch eliminating the need for detail, rather concentrating on the basics of form, tone and colour. Later in the day there will be more sustained poses which will continue into the second day, where students will have the chance to consolidate the ‘loose’ approach on a larger scale, retaining the painterly language and avoiding the impulse to add detail. The course will be a day spent at The National Gallery, working from the Masters, making drawings and colour studies. Students will have the opportunity to explore the collection and sketch from a range of paintings before choosing one masterpiece that they would like to focus on in depth, studies will be made in a range of quick sketches, in both black and white and colour, using graphite pencils and felt tip markers, before embarking on a longer sustained drawing of the masterwork.  The purpose of this workshop is not to ‘copy’ the masters, though this may be a preliminary stage in the process for some students. But rather to study a single master painting in depth through the process of drawing in order to use it as point of departure for an original work of contemporary art.

  • 18th & 19th November | 10am – 4pm | 2 days | Oils | Beginner, Intermediate & Advanced  This Masterclass is based in the area of Abstract Painting focusing on the role of mark-making and gesture. Within this sphere of practice we will consider the formal elements of painting in detail: colour, line, mark, gesture, touch, accumulation of matter and surface, depth, space and composition and how all these elements function in relation to your evolving painting practice. We will examine the concept of rhythm, movement and pace and ask what might influence our mark-making – where does gesture come from? What does it imply? Does gesture have the power to channel ‘forces’ or convey experience, express emotion or feeling? Or is it purely formal, a relationship between matter and surface, mark and depth? We will consider the relationship between gesture, rhythm and movement and the influence of music or sound and the natural rhythms of the environment. We will explore indeterminacy, intuitive and improvised approaches to painting in contrast to the predetermined, considering whether it is still possible to be spontaneous and immediate. In examining our PROCESS – do we plan and devise what we are going to do before hand or are our methods intuitive and instinctive? Are we following a particular process? Finally we will explore the concept of chaos in painting and how we might plunge into chaos in the pursuit of composition and a potential encounter with sublime sensation in the experience of painting itself. This Masterclass is designed to free you up, challenge you to expand, experiment and navigate new territory and take you right outside of your comfort zone!

At the end of the second day there will be a one-on-one critique/discussion of student’s work. Pay full amount or deposit. Balance due no later than 2 weeks before the course date, see Terms and Conditions for full details.

  • This one day workshop focuses on portrait painting and will look at the fundamentals of creating an expressive and painterly portrait. The course will begin with a short introduction when Adele will talk about the ideas behind her own paintings, approaches and techniques, and we will refer to portraiture throughout history to study colour relationships, tonal values, composition and paint application. We will look at all aspects of making a well composed portrait, from setting up to colour-mixing, and how tone and colour temperature can be used to describe structure, shape and form. Concentrating on the head and shoulders students will begin to refine their ideas of composition through drawing and by making a small-scale tonal study before beginning to work on a painting. There will be one-to-one tuition throughout the day and the course will end with a group discussion as we look at each others' work. Adele’s first book ‘Painting Still Life in Oils’ published by The Crowood Press in 2012, will be available to purchase during the day. Pay full amount or deposit. • 22nd - 26th January 2018 | 10am – 4pm | 5 Days | Oils Taught by Slade trained artist Ann Gardner, who rarely teaches in UK, this 5 day Masterclass is an exceptional treat and opportunity to gain knowledge from a practicing artist who was taught by Euan Uglow, Lucien Freud, Patrick George, William Coldstream and Cragie Atchinson. The main objective of this 5 day course is to teach the students how to paint a 'head' or a three dimensional object in space onto a two dimensional surface i.e. the picture plane, the surface of a canvas. There are many ways to approach this, using light source and tonality, comparative measurements and flat pattern making. Ann Gardner will explain these approaches clearly to each student and work closely with them as they paint. She will also teach how to handle the materials, how to mix colour and to draw with it building up the image. Through out the course Ann will be referring to artists notably Cezanne, Rembrandt, Titian and other great painters, suggesting paintings that will help students,  can easily be viewed in for The National Gallery London and further afield. The overall object is for students to learn how to look - not to create a fleeting likeness but to tap into and contain reality. To learn and understand the building blocks of painting and drawing. All the approaches that will be taught can be used in all aspects of future paintings, landscape, still life and abstract work. Pay full amount or deposit. Balance due no later than 4 weeks before the course date, see Terms and Conditions for full details.

  • June 11th - 15th 2018 | 10am – 4pm | Oils | Intermediate – Advanced  The figure will be the point of departure for exploration of pictorial structure. We will walk the line between accuracy and abstraction in our search. This line will lead us to create an image in the simplest terms: a shape and a colour made of paint. (Not a head or a leg). We will generate permutations through simplification and abstraction. This rigorous and wide-ranging analysis of the motif will help us see through and around the meaning of things to grasp relationships between objects and space. Mediums will include graphite, ink, acrylic or oil paint, and collage. Pay full amount or deposit. • June 18th – 22nd 2018 | 10am – 4pm | Oils | Intermediate – Advanced  This workshop takes a reductive approach to painting the head, experimenting with how little information is necessary. We will investigate whether translating the head into simple, accurate shapes of colour and value can create a truer likeness than detailed description can. Universal proportions of the head will be covered. Light and the way it affects perception of structure will be emphasised, as well as finding specific and surprising colour. We will work from the model. Self-portraits and a study of historical and contemporary portraiture will be included. Some painting experience required; oil paint is the preferred medium.  Pay full amount or deposit. • Oils | 5 Days | August 20th - 24th 2018 Class Day 1: Intro to Portrait Painting (Black and White) Emilio demonstrates painting a portrait using only black and white. Starting with drawing and then adding value, Emilio explains the effects of light and shadow and how to represent it using value and edges. Class Day 2: Painting with Color (Limited Palette) Using a limited color palette to paint a portrait is an easy way to transition from the black and white painting: Titanium White, Yellow Ochre, Cadmium Red, Ivory Black Emilio uses this palette to demonstrate Drawing, Value, Color, Light and Shadows. Class Day 3: Painting an Eye Focusing on one area (the eye) allows us to slow down and take our paintings to refinement. Students will have time to produce around 2-4 paintings in this session on the same panel. Demo covers drawing, shapes, value, color and finalizing a painting. Class Day 4: Quick Studies This lesson covers quick paintings ranging from 20-25 minutes. Painting quickly pushes you to make quick decisions while you paint. This is a great and fun way to discover new technique and experiment while being efficient with time. Emilio demonstrates how he organizes his approach for this shorter exercise.  Students will need 3 panels/canvases for this class day (or 2 16x20 panels) Class Day 5: Taking a Portrait to Completion Demo covers refinement with an emphasis on design and aesthetic. Emilio shares his approach to investigating a direction (design) during the process of painting. Technique will be discussed from a conceptual perspective.
